Bassmaster Elite Series - Alabama River Charge - Montgomery, AL, May 9 - 12, 2013

I wouldn't say the Alabama River is like going home, but it feels more like home. And what we have going this week for the Alabama River Charge is another good challenge for us here on the Bassmaster Elite Series. What is shaking out of practice is that this is going to be a pattern driven tournament. Personally, I'm on 4 or 5 five good patterns that I can run here. Not to say that it's going to be easy, no river system is, but if I slow down and cover my areas from top to bottom, I can say confidence is high.

One thing that is going to play a role on the River is the current. With the water levels up, they are consistently pulling water so that is going to keep things moving. Keying on the current, whether in it or around it, is no secret here and that is where most of the 99 pros will be concentrating their efforts.

After last week's weather issues, this week looks like we're catching a break. In fact, it looks like it's going to be pretty nice. Of course we never launch without the rain gear on board but getting down to work without adding Mother Nature to the list of competitors is one less thing to worry about. Not a bad way to make a living (smile).

Despite the size of the playing field from a satellite point of view, the River fishes somewhat small. Some guys are going to make a long run to the lower pools, but in my opinion, the rewards aren't worth the risk. I'd rather add that runtime to the time of my lure in the water to increase my chances. So I'm probably going to spend the tournament in the pool we're launching out of and covering from top to bottom and back again. No locking. Limited risk. Higher rewards. At least that's how I see it playing out.

So I have a few things in the hopper and the time to make adjustments if needed. I also have full box of confidence baits I can't wait to turn loose here. Stay tuned for more "Notes From Boat" to see what shakes out. - SB
