Pre-Delaware River Insights

Toughest tournament I’ve ever fished.  Yes, that is what the Elite Series tournament at the Delaware River is shaping up to be.  It’s really a weird deal here.  Being a river rat I’ve definitely been a part of some tough, grind it out tournaments, but for some reason this one is different.  There is a huge tidal fluctuation here, more than I’ve ever experienced.  I don’t claim to be a tidal guy, but doing well on river systems all comes down to understanding the current and hopefully some of my experience will pay off this week.

IMG957310.jpgMy practice period started very slowly.  I failed to have a single bass bite after fishing tons of beautiful, “bassy” looking areas.  There is surprisingly a lot of beautiful looking vegetation in the river and the scenery has been very cool.

I finally hit some pay dirt yesterday and had three bass bites.  It made perfect sense where the fish were and I can guarantee with the tough conditions this is the best area I have found.  I’ll definitely be there for the first two days of the tournament.

My friend Dennis Tietje and I have adopted a couple key words for this week at the Delaware: Focus and Stay Positive.  In a tournament like this where your mental toughness is constantly tested, the absolute best thing you can do is to focus and to stay positive.  If you aren’t focused for one second, it could cost you a fish and with bites at a premium, that fish could mean the difference between fishing on Sunday or leaving empty handed.

I’m going to grind it out, stay focused, and be positive throughout the event.  Let’s hope that makes all the difference this week on the Delaware where anything could happen. -SB
