Loving the Red River

Two years and two wins at the Bassmaster Central Open at the Red River, LA.  All I can say is I am really loving the Red River.  What a blessing it is to be hoisting that trophy again at the same fishery.  The Red is a place where I have some experience and can draw a lot of similarities to my home fisheries like the Arkansas River.  Things honestly couldn’t have went much better.  I came up with what I thought to be a solid game plan going into this thing and was lucky enough for it to work to perfection.

Day one, I went to an area that I found some good looking stuff in during my practice day the Thursday before the tournament started.  In practice, I didn’t do as much fishing as I did idling and marking spots that I thought would have a lot of potential.  Much to my surprise the first day, I was the only boat in there.  My first fish was a 4.5 lber which inflated my confidence in the area.  I was able to put together a quick limit with two fish in that 4 lb plus range.  With the wind and cloud cover that day, I figured the fish wouldn’t be holding as tight to cover so I threw an old Arkansas River special spinnerbait that was key.

Day two, I went back in and fished around and ended up hooking up with three good fish and catching two on one stump.  Somehow I didn’t mark it in practice.  I was definitely kicking myself for that, but it ended up working out anyway.  Weather conditions were much better than the first day of competition.  I figured with the sun and lack of wind the fish would be holding tighter to cover, so I adjusted and pulled out the flipping and cranking sticks.  I went to work and put together another respectable limit which left me in 2nd place going into yesterday.

Day three, conditions were similar and I headed to my first area which had a couple boats in it which surprised me, but I went to fishing anyway.  I moved around a bit and put together a small limit.  My co-angler was catching some quality fish with finesse baits, so I made the adjustment to a Z-Man Zinkerz and ended up catching a couple quality fish that helped me reel in another victory at the Red.

I can’t tell you how good it feels to win one of these things, as it’s so hard to even get into position to do so.  I couldn’t do it without the support from my wife and son, as well as all my great sponsors.  I’m headed to Toledo Bend to get in some practice for the Elite event coming up this week.  It will be another postspawn type deal and I’m really looking forward to it.  Hopefully, this momentum will help lead to another great finish there as well.  -SB
